What is activated carbon?

Hits:0  Time:2024-11-15

Activated carbon is a specially treated carbon material with a highly developed pore structure and a high specific surface area, which enables it to effectively adsorb impurities in gases, liquids, or colloidal solids. The main component of activated carbon is carbon, which is obtained by carbonizing and activating carbon containing materials such as coal, wood, coconut shells, etc.

The characteristics and applications of activated carbon include:

  1. High specific surface area: Due to its porous structure, activated carbon has a very large specific surface area, typically reaching 500 to 1500 square meters per gram. This enables it to adsorb a large number of molecules.

  2. Strong adsorption capacity: Activated carbon can remove impurities from liquids or gases, including organic compounds, odors, pigments, heavy metals, and other pollutants, through both physical and chemical adsorption methods.

  3. Multiple forms: Activated carbon can be made into various forms, including powder, particle, column, sheet, and honeycomb, to meet different application needs.

  4. Application areas:

-Water treatment: Activated carbon is widely used to remove organic pollutants, chlorine, odors, and chromaticity from water, and is suitable for drinking water purification, sewage treatment, and industrial wastewater treatment.

-Air purification: used in air purification equipment to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, and other harmful gases.

-Food and beverage: used to remove pigments and odors, improve the taste and quality of products.

-Medicine: In the field of medicine, activated carbon is used for detoxifying agents and pharmaceutical preparations.

-Industrial applications: used for catalyst support, solvent recovery, and gas purification, etc.

  5. Regeneration ability: Activated carbon can be regenerated through methods such as thermal regeneration or chemical regeneration, making it reusable and reducing usage costs.

Activated carbon has become an important material for environmental protection and industrial production due to its excellent adsorption performance and wide range of applications.
